Allan Elementary is located a few blocks away from
the Rhizome Collective. Ninety-three percent of the
student body are economically disadvantaged and
qualify for the federally funded free meal program.*
As is usual with public education, not all students are
offered equal opportunities.
In the fall of 2003,
Allan lost all funding for its after school programs.
The teachers were taking turns staying late, unpaid,
to provide 2 days of after school programming a week.
We decided to use the city of Austin's Cultural
Contract to organize an after school art class.
Throughout the spring semester of 2004, we held a
weekly after school art class for 3rd through 5th
graders. Around 25 kids attended the class. Volunteer
artists came in and shared the art that they love with
the kids. Projects included theater, book making, dance,
jewelry, ceramics, mural design and creation, musical
instrument making and playing, drawing and painting,
and sculpting a huge outdoor caterpillar bench
in the school courtyard out of all natural materials.

We would like to deeply thank everyone who participated in the 2004 class!!!!!!

Art Reach 2004-5
We hope to continue this after school mixed arts program
for children in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades during the 2004-5
school year under the new name Art Reach.
In the spring of 2005, we look forward to an exhibit of
exceptional pieces of art from each student. The exhibit
will open with a celebration for students, their parents,
and the community. It will take place at a location to
the school, to be announced.
For the class, we are in need of:
Artists to lead classes
Volunteers who enjoy working with children
Matching funds for the city contract
Art Supplies
Snacks
For the exhibit, we are in need of:
Volunteers for promotions and general event organization
Frames
