Free Skool for the Arts 2003

The Rhizome Collective's first contract with the city of Austin was in 2002-3 for our Free Skool for the Arts. We organized 3 all-day events of free arts classes for children and adults, taught by volunteer teachers. We also coordinated weekly art classes at the Rivercity Youth Foundation, a community center in Southeast Austin.

The 2003 Free Skool for the Arts was funded by the city of Austin cultural contracts and tantien and friends.

The purpose of the Free Skool for the Arts, and any current and upcoming ‘Free Skools’ or skill-share classes is to:

Provide a space and experience for self-expression, personal and community growth and autonomy Encourage a learning experience that is a non-intimidating sharing of skills among peers Break the barriers inherent to the traditional school setting between students, teachers and administration.
